The Gift of Life program started on Long Island in 1973 when a child from Uganda was brought to the United States by Rotarians in Nassau County for life-saving heart surgery. (That child is now in her 40’s and works for Gift of Life International!) The project blossomed from there, now having provided similar surgery to over 18,000 young people around the world. Here in Suffolk County, New York, the Rotary Clubs of District 7255 have transitioned the program to a mission-based program, sending skilled teams of doctors and support staff overseas, running several such missions annually to places such as El Salvador, Haiti, Uganda, and other countries.
